ASME Flow Laboratory

The Fike Flow Laboratory is a general-purpose flow characterization laboratory for quantifying the performance of rupture disc devices, rupture disc/relief valve combinations, and any other device whose flow capacity and/or resistance to flow must be determined. The laboratory is used as a research and development tool, to support specific customer applications and many other unique testing opportunities:

  • Product development flow resistance and capacity tests
  • ASME “UD” certification tests
  • ASME five-year production audits of certified rupture disc devices
  • Flow capacity measurements
  • Combination capacity tests of rupture discs coupled with pressure relief valves
  • “UV” (valve) certification tests

Fike engineers who are responsible for test supervision and record keeping are accredited as “Authorized Observers” (AO) by the ASME and the NB. These credentials have been achieved by technical examination performed by a representative from the NB Testing Laboratory. Fike laboratory engineers have also been granted authority to supervise and certify tests which produce certifiable flow resistance and flow capacity data.
The Flow Laboratory has met the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NB) and is a certified testing facility (certification # PRD-023).

Metallurgy Laboratory

The Fike Metallurgy Lab is vital to the design and engineering of Fike products, as it is used to increase the understanding of the behavior of materials used in manufacturing. Fike’s on-site location allows product investigations to be performed more quickly and efficiently by a staff with nearly 40 years of metallurgical and materials sciences expertise.
Among the tests available through the Fike Metallurgy Lab are:

  • Analysis of Rupture Discs, plate, bar, pipes, etc., for size and shape, cleanliness, surface condition (including base metal and coatings), modes of failure, microstructural condition and constituents, grain size and boundary conditions, chemical segregation, and microhardness
  • Microscopic measurement and analysis, image archiving and electronic reporting
  • Pressure vessel soundness and material properties after heat treatment
  • Rupture / Explosion Disc score depth and shape consistency
  • Heat treat furnace time; temperature and atmospheric effects on disc materials.
  • Corrosion effects on rupture discs and corrosive properties of disc materials.

Application / Industry Support

Fike’s testing services are available to certify custom products developed for specific customer applications…including those manufactured for aerospace/defense contracts, special gas handling applications and many other variants of standard product offerings. The Flow Lab can also provide flow test capabilities for other flow characterization needs — such as combination assemblies and manifolds, and fire and explosion protection components. And since Fike has equipment ranging from 1/4-inch to 4-inches, we have the capability of testing a wider range of disc sizes than any of our competition.

Fike has used these unique testing capabilities/facilities to support the testing needs of specific industry organizations. In addition Fike’s experienced, accredited laboratory staff are regular participants on local and national industry boards and committees including ASM (American Society for Metals), ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), AICHE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers), and ASNT (American Society for Nondestructive Testing).

Explosion Protection Testing / Laboratories

Explosibility testing provides a basis for safe plant design, operating parameters, and handling procedures. In addition to the research and development work that Fike completes on its own products, we offer a wide range of explosibility tests designed to assist companies in identifying and mitigating costly explosion hazards. Fike’s state-of-the-art testing laboratory is staffed with highly trained technicians, engineers, and combustion scientists; and tests are conducted in accordance with ASTM and CEN standards to assure proper execution and interpretation.

Testing Services

Fike provide tests in both small- and large-scale explosion test vessels in accordance with applicable ASTM and CEN Standards. These test vessels are designed and constructed to provide accurate explosion protection data that is scalable to industrial equipment volumes.

Application / Professional Support

In addition to a wide range of standardized explosion tests, Fike conducts specialized explosion application and equipment tests, specifically designed for the customer’s unique industrial environment.

  • Design and performance validation of customer-supplied equipment.
  • Determine explosibility, flammability, and ignitability parameters at unique non-standard conditions.
  • Validation of Fike products when applied to customer-specific operating conditions outside established performance limits.
  • Active participation in the development and validation of international testing standards (ASTM, EN).

Fike’s knowledgeable scientists, engineers, and technicians have experience with a wide variety of fuels, oxidants and test conditions. This extensive background strengthens our ability to develop and execute effective test plans. High-speed data acquisition and high speed digital video systems are routinely used for capturing the physical characteristics of all tests. And Fike has used all of these testing capabilities to support individual customer application requirements, as well as specific industry and professional organization needs.

Fike Approved to Test DEA Schedule II, III and IV Controlled Substances

The Fike laboratory is approved by the Drug Enforcement Agency and the State of Missouri for the receipt and analysis of Schedule II, III, and IV controlled substances. A list of the applicable substances is available.

Explosion Test Lab / Equipment

Fike maintains a comprehensive, 3000 sq. ft. combustion and research testing facility at its corporate headquarters in Blue Springs, MO. Testing capabilities at the laboratory include dust cloud explosibility parameters, (Kst, Pmax), dust cloud ignition limits (LOC, MEC), auto-ignition temperature (MAIT), minimum ignition energy (MIE), dust layer ignition temperature (MIT), gas explosibility parameters (Kmax, Pmax, LFL, UFL, LOC) at ambient and elevated temperature/pressure, liquid auto-ignition temperature, burning velocity and burning number.

Full Scale Testing

Fike also maintains a unique, 26,000 sq. ft. remote test facility for conducting large scale research, product development, and industrial application tests. At this isolated location, full scale tests can be conducted where noise is not an issue and release of flame can be done safely. Whether testing Fike explosion protection products or customer provided equipment, a wide range of tests is available, including flame propagation and isolation, explosion suppression, explosion venting, and combinations.
